Route and Terrain

The parking is right next to the picnic area and river, this is manageable for almost all, although there is a natural path down to the river which a pram or wheelchair would struggle with. The playground is just across the road. A very easy and convenient family spot that has lots to offer.

Sights & Experiences

The star of this walk is undoubtedly the River Greta itself. We loved the clear, shallow sections perfect for paddling and exploring. Further downstream, we discovered a deeper spot that looked like a fun jumping-in point on a warmer day! The surrounding woodlands offer dappled light and the soothing sound of running water. Keep an eye out for remnants of the old pottery industry, hints of Burton's industrial past, scattered along the riverbanks. The views across the valley to the Yorkshire Dales add to the picturesque setting.

Hidden Gems

While the main picnic area by the river is lovely, we found a more secluded spot downstream, past the playground and sports pavilion. It offered a quieter atmosphere and direct access to the water. If you venture further into Greta Woods, you might stumble upon small, disused quarries now teeming with ferns and liverworts – a miniature world of natural beauty.

History & Heritage

Burton in Lonsdale has a rich history, once home to potteries known as 'Black Burton' due to kiln smoke. Evidence of this past can be seen in scattered pottery shards along the river. The village also boasts the remains of Burton in Lonsdale Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey structure built around 1092. Though little remains today, its historical significance as a strategic point over the River Greta is evident. The village itself is a charming stone-built settlement, with the church spire a prominent landmark.

Seasonal Changes & Best Time to Visit

This route is delightful year-round. In spring, the woodlands burst with new life. Summer offers the best chance for a dip in the river, though some paths can become overgrown. Autumn brings beautiful colours to the trees, and winter offers a crisp, peaceful atmosphere, though muddy patches are more likely.

Parking & Public Transport

We parked in the gravelled semi-circle right next to the picnic benches and BBQ station by the river. There is free parking by the picnic benches and in the sports pavilion. We've been on sunny bank holidays and found it surprisingly quiet. The nearby sports pavilion has toilets, but these are primarily for events, so public access isn't guaranteed.

Safety & Preparation

The main hazards are the river itself, especially downstream where it's deeper. Supervise children closely. Footwear with good grip is advisable, particularly if exploring off the main paths or after rain.

Difficulty & Alternatives

This is a very easy and family-friendly route. The terrain is mostly flat and on good paths. The main route is suitable for pushchairs and those with limited mobility. Children will love exploring the riverbanks and the playground. For those seeking a bit more, exploring the wooded areas offers a slightly rougher, but still manageable, terrain. There are no steep inclines or difficult sections.

Insider Tip

Our top tip: pack nets for the kids! The shallow parts of the River Greta are teeming with tiny fish, and they’ll have a blast trying to catch them. It’s a simple joy that makes the day extra special.

Recommended Shops & Pit Stops

The sports pavilion across the road has a playground, outdoor workout equipment, and a dirt bike track for younger children. The Punch Bowl Inn is the village's last remaining pub and a good spot for a refreshment.
