High Dam is a stunning hidden treasure tucked away in the woodlands above Finsthwaite, offering a much quieter and more tranquil alternative to the busier lakeside destinations nearby. The walk begins from the car park at the base of the hill and involves a relatively short but steady 800-metre incline. The path winds through beautiful ancient oak woodland before opening up to the wide, peaceful expanse of the tarn, which feels like a private escape from the crowds.
The tarn itself is a perfect spot for wild swimming or paddle boarding, with clear, calm waters surrounded by soft grassy banks and trees. It is important to keep in mind that while the water is inviting, carrying heavy boards or bulky swimming gear up the 800-metre climb can be quite a challenge due to the steepness of the trail. Compact or lightweight gear is highly recommended for those planning to get out on the water.
Because this is a more secluded spot, it is essential to be respectful of the natural surroundings to keep it a peaceful haven. Please ensure all litter is taken back down to the car park and avoid blocking any access gates or narrow sections of the road when parking. This is a fragile woodland ecosystem, so staying on the marked paths during the ascent helps protect the local flora and ensures the area remains beautiful for everyone who visits.
