Route and Terrain

When we tested this route, we found it starts quite gently on a paved road, which soon transitions to a well-trodden dirt trail. This path winds along the stunning cliff line, offering incredible coastal vistas. However, don't let the initial ease fool you – the descent to Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo itself is notably steep and rather rocky, demanding good foot placement and concentration. We encountered several sections with loose stones and realised it can get a bit slippery, particularly after rain. While most people with a reasonable level of fitness will find it doable, it's definitely a rough terrain walk, so leave the sandals at home! It's absolutely not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs due to the challenging and uneven ground.

Sights & Experiences

Oh, the sights on this walk are truly spectacular! The main draw, of course, is the breathtaking Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo itself, often lauded as one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches. As you descend, the wild, untouched beauty unfolds before you – think calm, crystal-clear waters shimmering in shades of turquoise and emerald green, reminiscent of a tropical paradise. We loved admiring the surrounding dramatic cliffs, adorned with lush greenery, and the impressive rock formations jutting out of the serene sea. Before you even reach the beach, the walk provides continuous panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the rugged coastline from the clifftops, particularly impressive near the Segunda Torre lookout point. Keep an eye out for potential dolphin sightings in the Sado Estuary too! The nearby Formosos Rock Pools also offer fascinating natural pools and even an underwater canyon for the truly adventurous.

Hidden Gems

Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo itself was, until very recently, a real hidden gem – a well-guarded secret that wasn't even on many maps! We felt like we were uncovering something truly special. Beyond the main beach, for those feeling intrepid, there are whispers of a fascinating sea cave known as Gruta do Tamboril (or Lapa do Forte do Cavalo). You might even stumble upon the unique Formosos Rock Pools, which are natural pools carved into the rock, offering an underwater canyon and smaller caves to explore. They truly add an extra layer of adventure to your visit!

History & Heritage

Our walk starts in Sesimbra, a town steeped in history. Originally settled by the Romans and Moors, it played a strategic role in Portugal's coastal defence for centuries. As we set off, we were reminded of its deep connection to the ocean, having been an important fishing port for generations. You can still see this heritage alive in the bustling fishing harbour and the local cuisine. High above the town, the ancient Sesimbra Castle stands proudly, a Moorish fortress offering incredible panoramic views; we definitely recommend a visit after your walk to soak up more of the area's past. The 17th-century Fortaleza de Santiago, once a protection against pirates, is also a prominent landmark visible from parts of the route.

Seasonal Changes & Best Time to Visit

We found that the best time to visit this route is during the spring or autumn shoulder seasons (mid-May to June and October). The weather is generally pleasant, the days are long, and crucially, the intense summer crowds are much lighter. In July and August, this beach can get incredibly busy, especially on weekends, with many people flocking to its stunning shores. While the water is calm and inviting, be aware it can still be quite chilly even in summer.

Parking & Public Transport

There are plenty of car parks available in Sesimbra town, though free on-street parking is a bit of a rarity and highly coveted! We usually opt for the metered lots, which are convenient and reasonably priced, typically around €1-2 for a couple of hours. For longer stays, there are cheaper daily options situated a little further from the old urban centre, costing about €1.5 per day.

Safety & Preparation

Proper preparation is key for this walk! We strongly recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes with good grip, definitely not flip-flops, as the descent to the beach is steep, rocky, and can be slippery. Carry a comfortable backpack to keep your hands free for stability.

Difficulty & Alternatives

We'd rate this walk as moderately difficult, leaning towards challenging on the descent and ascent to the beach. The trail includes steep inclines and declines, rough terrain, and rocky, uneven sections that require careful footing. It's a linear route, so remember that the challenging descent you enjoy will become a demanding climb back up! Due to these factors, we wouldn't recommend it for young children (under 12-13 years old), pushchairs, wheelchairs, or anyone with limited mobility or low physical fitness.

Insider Tip

My top tip for Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo? Pack light, but pack smart – especially bringing a proper pair of trainers! The reward of dipping into those unbelievably clear, calm waters after the challenging hike is just incredible, making every rocky step worth it.

It's renowned for its fresh seafood, and we love dining at one of the many restaurants overlooking the harbour. You'll find everything from traditional Portuguese fare at places like O Rodinhas to excellent grilled fish at Café Filipe. If you fancy something different, Aloha Café even offers delicious vegan options.
