Angle Tarn Circular, Patterdale

England · Cumbria · 4.4 miles (round trip) · ~2 hrs 14 min–2 hrs 44 min (round trip)

Explore this stunning Lakeland circuit from Patterdale. Enjoy breathtaking fells, rugged mountain vistas, and a dip in a pristine mountain tarn.

Route and Terrain

The walk primarily features well-maintained gravel paths during the ascent from Patterdale to Boredale Hause, offering a steady, manageable climb. As you progress toward the tarn and higher ground, the terrain transitions into more rugged, rocky, and occasionally uneven mountain tracks. While much of the route is solid underfoot, there are sections near the tarn and on some of the higher ridges that can become boggy, particularly after rainfall. A few parts of the circular route involve steeper, potentially slippery descents, especially when passing through small patches of woodland or over rocky, rubbly surfaces. Proper hiking footwear is essential to navigate these variations in ground, and while the main paths are clear, being prepared for sudden shifts in surface quality is key to a safe trek.

Sights & Experiences

Angle Tarn itself is the absolute highlight, renowned for its crystal-clear water, picturesque islets, and dramatic backdrop of High Street. We found the tarn to be a peaceful sanctuary, far removed from the valley noise. The surrounding fells offer a masterclass in Lakeland beauty; from the ridges, we were treated to sweeping views over Brothers Water, the Helvellyn range, and the deep, steep-sided valleys of Martindale. The route also takes you past Angletarn Pikes, where the views back down toward the water are truly spectacular. For nature lovers, the area is rich in wildlife; we were lucky enough to hear the guttural, haunting calls of stags during the autumn rut, and the tarn is a frequent spot for birdlife, including Canada Geese. The landscape here is diverse, shifting from verdant, fern-filled hillsides to craggy, windswept summits.

Hidden Gems

While most hikers stick to the main track to the tarn, we highly recommend the short detour to the summit of the second Angletarn Pike. It offers a much quieter perspective and superior panoramic views. If you are looking for a moment of total silence, head to the far side of the tarn near the crags; we found it much easier to have the water entirely to ourselves away from the main arrival path. For those wanting to extend their adventure, the descent past the old Hayeswater reservoir provides a starkly different, moody atmosphere compared to the sunny slopes of the main ascent.

History & Heritage

The area is steeped in classic Lakeland lore. The tarn itself was one of Alfred Wainwright’s personal favourites, and it is easy to see why he held it in such high regard. Interestingly, the tarn made national news in 2011 when the first mysterious 'Lake District Star Jelly'—a strange, jelly-like substance found in the tarn's puddles—was discovered, creating quite the local legend. The paths you follow have been traversed for centuries, forming part of the historical routes used by locals and shepherds, and the nearby Boredale Hause remains a major junction for the famous Coast to Coast walk.

Seasonal Changes & Best Time to Visit

Spring brings vibrant, lush greenery, while summer is ideal for wild swimming when the water is refreshing. Autumn is particularly magical, as the bracken turns a rich, golden copper and you might hear the red deer rutting in the valley. Winter requires caution, as the high fells can be treacherous with snow or ice, and the paths become significantly boggier.

Parking & Public Transport

The most common starting point is the Patterdale Hotel car park or the nearby 'White Lion' pub parking in Patterdale village. Spaces fill up rapidly, especially on weekends and bank holidays, so arriving before 8:30 am is highly recommended. Some roadside parking is available, but please respect local access and residents. Payment can often be made via machines or by visiting the local pub as instructed. Public transport is a great alternative, with buses stopping in Patterdale/Glenridding.

Safety & Preparation

Mountain weather changes in minutes; always pack waterproofs and extra layers, even in summer. Mobile signal is unreliable on the fells, so download your map for offline use. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are a must for boggy and rocky sections. Tell someone your route and expected return time.

Difficulty & Alternatives

Classed as a moderate walk due to the steady, persistent ascent from the valley floor. While navigation is straightforward in good visibility, the high-fell sections can be disorienting in mist. If the full circuit feels too much, you can opt for an 'out-and-back' route directly to the tarn, which removes the need to navigate the potentially rougher terrain of the wider loop.

Insider Tip

If you plan to swim, bring a light towel and a dry bag; the water is invigorating! Also, the best light for photography is late afternoon when the sun hits the far bank, making the blue of the tarn look absolutely surreal.

Recommended Shops & Pit Stops

Patterdale and nearby Glenridding offer several pubs and cafes perfect for a post-walk pint or hearty meal, such as the White Lion Inn.
