Route and Terrain
The initial path from the roadside parking near the telephone box is mostly clear, though it can be uneven underfoot. As we ventured further, we encountered boggy sections, which were particularly noticeable even in summer. Grip was essential on some of the rockier descents. The route isn't overly steep but does have some inclines. There are opportunities to explore further upstream along the river. It's a relatively wild environment, with narrow paths and natural obstacles. This walk is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs due to the terrain. Children will likely enjoy the adventure, but close supervision is needed, especially near the water and boggy areas. Dogs are welcome, but must be kept under close control.
Sights & Experiences
The stars of this walk are undoubtedly the numerous small waterfalls and pools that punctuate the route. We found the journey up to Tongue Pot to be incredibly rewarding. Tongue Pot itself is a large, deep pool with crystal-clear, emerald water, perfect for a refreshing dip. For the more adventurous, there are cliff jumps here for older kids and adults. Just upstream, we discovered the beautiful Lingcove Beck Falls, a taller waterfall with a lovely clear, shallow pool beneath it. The whole valley is a picturesque scene of rugged fells and flowing water, with the River Esk providing a constant, soothing soundtrack.
Hidden Gems
We walked right past some cows grazing that barely blinked at us, we found a lizard under the rocks, there are multiple pools and waterfalls all the way up some more difficult to access, see the MyMap for some of our favourites. Keep an eye out for smaller tributaries feeding into the Esk; they often lead to hidden miniature waterfalls.
History & Heritage
The Eskdale valley has a rich history, with evidence of Roman presence at the nearby Hardknott Roman Fort, which would have been a lonely outpost overlooking the pass. The packhorse bridge near Lingcove Beck Falls is a reminder of the valley's past as a route for trade and travel. The area has also been shaped by mining and agriculture over centuries.
Seasonal Changes & Best Time to Visit
The walk is beautiful year-round, but the boggy sections can become more challenging after heavy rain. Summer offers the best chance for wild swimming, though the water can still be bracing. Autumn brings lovely colours to the surrounding woodlands. Winter can make the boggy ground very difficult and potentially hazardous.
Parking & Public Transport
We parked in the roadside parking near the old red telephone box at the foot of Hardknott Pass. This is free parking, but spaces are limited, especially during peak times and summer holidays. Arriving early is highly recommended. Further roadside parking can be found about 100m down the road from Jubilee Bridge. Moorhead car park is a paid option in Eskdale, a short drive away.
Safety & Preparation
The main hazard we encountered was the boggy terrain; it's very easy to sink in unexpectedly, so careful footing is crucial. Waterproof footwear is essential. Be mindful of the water depth at Tongue Pot and the surrounding pools, especially if attempting jumps. The pool rocks are very slippery.
Difficulty & Alternatives
We'd rate this walk as moderate. The distance is manageable, but the boggy and rocky sections require careful navigation. It's generally suitable for families with older children who are confident walkers. The allure of Tongue Pot and the waterfalls makes it a great motivator. For those seeking a shorter or easier option, exploring just the initial section with its smaller pools might be more suitable, or simply enjoying the view from Lingcove Bridge.
Insider Tip
Our top tip? Go early or late, especially if you want to experience Tongue Pot at its most serene and avoid the crowds. We found that arriving before 10 am made a huge difference to the peacefulness of the spot.
Recommended Shops & Pit Stops
The Boot Inn and Brook House Inn in Boot village offer traditional pub fare. The Woolpack Inn is also a popular walkers' pub further up the valley.
